Playing the survival game can be stressful for our minds, but the game must be played. A lot of what we do, we do by instinct – it is the ‘primitive brain’ that is thinking for us, our subconscious. This allows our minds to try and stay relaxed and not be over-loaded. The game that is life is therefore concealed in many ways.
Our desire to look good to others arises from our subconscious, and can affect the way we live greatly. It is a crucial part of survival in modern day society. It is understood that reputation has always been held in high regard in humans – from the beginning of our evolution to man as we know it. If you had a looked good and had a good reputation, you would have had a higher rank in your tribe. This hasn’t changed too much in modern day society, so long as you remember not to over-think trying to always look good to others.
In today’s fast-paced modern society people try to ‘look good’ in many ways. Contribution to society, accomplishments, admiration and creativity are all aspects which may change the way we are seen by others. But something as simple as make-up or wearing your nicest clothes also affects the way that we perceive ourselves to be seen. It is the survival game that has led us to evolve into who we are today. The way we are perceived and the way we perceive others is determined by this, and is the reason we decide people are ‘beautiful’ to us or not.
